2016 - Germany, Switzerland, Austria
(left) a view over the small town
of Vitznau, on the shores of Lake
Lucerne.
The campsite is right here.

(below) There is a regular steamer
service around the lake which will
take you to many other beautiful
villages or into the city of Lucerne.
You can wander down to the
quayside and sit in one of the
lakeside cafés and simply watch the
people as they come and go between
the boat and the train.
We chose to have some lazy days.
The weather was so warm and sunny
that it was very pleasant just to stay
on site and chill out with a good book
and a sunhat.

Onward to Camping Aaregg in BRIENZ [8], our second location in Switzerland. This campsite is right beside the
Brienzersee and has astounding views of the lakes and mountains. There are pitches right on the waters edge but
just a little bit too inclined for us to be able to level up so we had to settle for the second row.

(left) The Brienzersee viewed
from the route from Lucerne. the
town is on the right hand side, the
campsite is the white objects on
the nearest shoreline.
The town is about a 20 minute
walk away alongside the lake or
you can ride there in less than 10
mins.
In Brienz there are a couple of
supermarkets, banks, cafés etc.
There is another rack railway
which will take you to the top of
the mountain ridge but the day we
were going to go it was cloudy at
the top and so we abandoned the
idea.
However, we did take a boat trip (right) from Brienz
down the length of the lake to Interlaken. It was a
lovely cruise even though the weather was a bit
rainy.
Interlaken was a big disappointment. It was full of
tourist shops selling watches, some very large,
expensive hotels and the streets seemed to be
teeming with tourists , many wearing burkas.
It started to rain more heavily and we went to
Hooters for lunch.
Still raining and so we walked back to the station
and took the train back to Brienz. Your return ticket
entitles you to use either the boat or the train in
both directions.
George was in need of some exercise and so set out the following day to hike up the mountainside to a dramatic
waterfall. It was quite a steep 600m climb but very enjoyable.

The campsite is just o the
left of the trees.
After a 3 night stop it was time to say goodbye to Brienz and to Switzerland
and make our way, via Litchenstein and the Arlberg tunnel into Austria.
We found Switzerland very expensive. Most items cost approximately 2 to 3
times UK prices. Diesel was around the same price but food and drink were
pricey.
IMST [9] was our first stop in Austria. Imst West campsite is in the town and
shops are 5 mins away. The site has recently built new sanitary facilities and
these were very impressive. The owners are a young couple who make you
feel very welcome.

The main reason for visiting Imst
is the Alpine Coaster at Hoch
Imst.
This is a summer toboggan run
which is 3.5km long and drops
500m from top to bottom. It is
totally safe and gentle but it is
great fun for kids and adults -
even Grandpas!

The best way to reach the Alpine Coaster is to hike the Rosengarten Gorge from
Imst town up to Hoch Imst.
The Rosengarten Gorge is an exciting and spectacular narrow gorge (see below)
with tumbling waterfalls, tunnels and dramatic views. At the top, the path takes
you directly up to the Alpine Coaster area.
The Alpine Coaster takes you up to the start of the run on a chair lift. When you start your run down leave extra time
between you and the person in front, especially if it is a child. If the person in front goes slowly you will catch them up long
before you reach the bottom. The man at the top understands this problem and will let you wait if it is not too busy.
Recommended to visit.
