2017 - U S A - October
Much of the action in Savannah is along the river side where the old cotton traders warehouses have been converted into hotels and bars.
We took a trip on the riverboat and learned a little more of the history of the town. We were amazed to hear descriptions of the ocean going container ships that used the port and only just passed under the enormous suspension bridge across the river! (below) a large container ship moves slowly down river whilst we enjoy a few drinks at a quayside bar.
The evening also brings out the local boys in their beautifully restored, classic cars. Cruising slowly along the riversideRadios booming out rap music and the car suspension dancing up and down to the beat. Great fun!
Savannah Cont:
One evening we visited a riverside bar called Duelling Pianos. It had a nightclub atmosphere. The idea was that you write down your choice of song or music and a funny comment to be written up on the huge mirrors at the back of the stage. You accompanied your note with a financial contribution. The pianists would compete for the best performances and also for the funniest comments on their mirror. An excellent evening! On our last night we went out to dinner at one of Savannah’s most popular restaurants. There are just a huge number to choose from. Our choice, our rather Alexa’s choice was The Olde Pink House. It was Brian and Alexa’s wedding anniversary.
SERGEANTSVILLE NJ it was very kind of John and Maryann to invite us to stay with them for a few days. Sergeantsville is a lovely small town near Lambertsville and close to the Delaware River. We have visited this area before and there are many photos already on this website. John is a keen hiker and he was keen to introduce George to a section of the Appalachian Trail. We were joined by Brian for the day and drove some miles to join the trail. Unfortunately, it was an overcast day but it was an excellent introduction to the trail which was mainly through the wooded hillsides of the Appalachian mountains. We climbed to the top of a fire watchtower and had far reaching views of the mountains. All around the autumn colours were beginning to appear. It was a lovely day out.
John and Maryann also took us out for a day to the Jersey Shore. It was cold and very, very windy. There were huge Atlantic rollers crashing on to the beach from a grey ocean. The wind was so strong that it was difficult to walk against it. An good visit but the weather let us down! It was interesting to visit the coast and there seemed to be quite a lot in common with UK seaside towns. Many areas were run down and neglected, as in UK, where the seaside resorts have lost popularity since the introduction of cheap flights to more attractive climates. No photos here because of the weather. We took a ride into Lambertville and in preparation for Halloween the townsfolk had decorated their porches and gardens with ghosts of all kinds. Here are just a few. All very cleverly made and quite an attraction in town.
The giant spider gave poor Desnée a real shock because as it hears people approaching it swings it’s head and wobbles it’s legs! We walked across the Delaware bridge into New Hope. George had decided that he wanted to ride the steam train. But, a big disappointment - it was only a diesel locomotive running!
New Hope Station
Before leaving John and Maryann, we all enjoyed a meal out at the local Sergeantsville Inn. The Inn is 300 years old and had suffered a fire in March 2015 but had now been restored and open for business. Excellent cuisine.
All too soon our USA visit was drawing to a close. We returned to Newark and our flight home to UK. Before we knew it, it was Christmas and the end of another year.
We had a very plump young waiter assigned to our table. “ Hi, my name is Sam and I will be your server tonight”. Every time we asked Sam a question or ordered something, his standard response was “You got it”. This puzzled me because if we already had it, which we did not, then why would we be asking for it?? Just another American saying, I guess! It was time to say goodbye to Savannah. We had enjoyed our visit and would be happy to go back another time. Brian and Alexa flew back to Jersey City and work. We flew back to Newark with John and Maryann and then travelled to their house in Sergeantsvill NJ where we were to be their house guests.
